Hi, I’m Ed, and I’m a plastic crack addict.
This is, hopefully, the first post of many. On this blog, I
intend to keep a record of everything I do, hobby-wise. It’s not the first time
I’ve tried this, but I’m determined to make it work this time. While I do hope
to gain a few readers at least, this is mainly a resource for me to see what I’ve
achieved, and when I did it.
I’ve been playing 40k for maybe 6-7 years now, and in that time,
I’ve started more projects than I can possibly remember. I intend to start many
more before my time is up. Starting things is easy. Finishing them, or at least
getting them to a reasonably satisfying point, is not. In all this time, I have
played only a handful of games where my entire force was painted, and they were
tournament games where it was required by the rules! So, to do something about
this, I have started this blog, where I can keep track of what I’m working on
and see how much progress has been made.
It can be demoralising when you spend hours on a unit and
realise you’re only halfway through the basecoats, but it’s all progress. For
this reason, I will post plenty of ‘work in progress’ models and units, and
talk about what I’ve done, and how long it took me to do it.
Part of the problem has been my ‘one army’ mentality. Some
of my friends are much, much less impulsive than I am, and can resist buying
new models before their old ones are done. As well as this, they’re much less
perfectionist than I am, and are generally satisfied with putting less work
into a model than I would be. This is a good mentality to have, as it means
they can paint units much more quickly, and when they’re massed on the tabletop
no one will notice the difference! However, I’m not like that. I have to paint
everything to a higher standard to be happy with it, and I take much longer to
build and paint anyway! This means that I inevitably get bored of painting one
army very quickly and ‘move on’ to something I feel I’ll enjoy more. So why not
have multiple projects on the go at once? That way I’m much less likely to bore.
So, without further ado, here is my current list of
projects. I am setting the end of the year as the deadline to achieve all these
goals. We’ll see how that goes… The list is subject to change, new projects
will inevitably surface and take priority over others, but I’d still ideally
like to get this all done, eventually.
Vlka Fenryka
My one true love in all of Warhammer are the Horus Heresy
era Space Wolves. I have been waiting for Inferno for six years, ever since I
first set eyes on the ‘Pre Heresy’ models on the (now sadly deleted) Space
Wolves blog. I plan on building a substantial force, a true legion, infantry
heavy. I haven’t got an exact list, but obviously Leman Russ and the Wolfkin
will be at the heart of it, as well as a lot of terminators and veterans, a
good few tanks… and if the rumours of a plastic thunderhawk are true, then I’m
getting one of them!
Painted:
7 marines, undecided as to their role
Unpainted:
5 Custodes, partially painted but I’m probably going to
repaint them black anyway
5 Sisters of Silence
Wolf Lord
Rune Priest
5 Cataphractii Terminators
5 Tartaros Terminators
1 Contemptor Dreadnought
1 Contemptor Mortis
10 bolter marines
3 bolter marines (incomplete squad)
1 Vindicator
Unbuilt:
1 Land Raider Phobos
7 marines (to complete the squad)
30th Anniversary marine, to be some kind of
consul
Unbought:
Leman Russ
The Wolfkin of Russ
Any special units that Forge World release
Another vindicator
Leviathan Dreadnought or 2 – those things are too damn cool
Thunderhawk – MAYBE IF the plastic one is real / affordable
No doubt a lot of other stuff
Ynnari Eldar
I have long played my Dark Eldar army, and I also have a
sizeable collection of harlequins that I haven’t painted yet. With the imminent
arrival of Gathering Storm II and the Triumvirate of Ynnead, I intend to form
parts of these collections in to a new force, dedicated to the god of death. I
will be following the red colour scheme for this army. I don’t like the Craftworld
Eldar models at all, so where they are required for formations etc., I will use
some (possibly modified) Dark Eldar models to represent those units. For
example, Kabalite Warriors as Dire Avengers.
Unpainted:
5 wracks
10 Wyches
1 Starweaver
Eldrad
3 Harlequin Troupes
2 Skyweavers (painted in wrong scheme)
Unbuilt
Triumvirate of Ynnead (Yncarnae, Visarch and Cat Lady)
2 Skyweavers
Unbought
Other unknown stuff required for formations.
Tau Empire
I intend for this to be my ‘competitive’ army, but I suck at
the game so let’s see how far that gets me. It will be built around a solid,
nasty core of riptides and a stormsurge, so hopefully it should be enough to
turn my friends to my enemies and make my enemies weep tears of blood. I’ll be
painting these up in white and red, like this.
Unpainted:
1 Ethereal on Hover Drone
10 Fire Warriors
1 Crisis commander
2 Crisis suits
10 Drones
1 Riptide, partially painted
Unbuilt:
1 Riptide
10 Pathfinders
Devilfish
Unbought:
1 Stormsurge
Adeptus Mechanicus
My much-loved pink Mechanicus army has languished in a state
of half-completion for too long. I normally run the War Convocation formation,
so I will paint everything I haven’t got around to finishing yet that I need to
field the formation.
Painted:
Imperial Knight Paladin
Tech Priest Dominus
10 Rangers
3 Kastellan Destroyers
Unpainted:
Ironstrider
5 Infiltrators
5 Ruststalkers
10 Vanguard
3 Breachers
2 Kastellan Robots (though I never play with them, so might
not be bothered)
Unbuilt:
10 Skitarii – unsure whether to build Rangers, Vanguard, or
maybe get some Secutarii upgrades
Archmagos Cawl
INQ28 Admech warband
I have begun messing about with parts to build a Mechanicus
themed warband for INQ28 games. It will of course be quite a small project,
only a few characters to convert and paint.
Blood Bowl
Chaos Team
I have been playing some Blood Bowl lately with the starter
set teams, which is fun, but they lack any personality, and as they are not
mine I can’t paint them! I’m not 100% set on a team yet, but I’m thinking of a
Khorne-themed one with the AOS Blood Warriors and some beastmen.
Unbought
Blood warrior blockers
Beastmen
A minotaur
9th Age Vermin Swarm
My friends and I have long discussed jumping in to fantasy,
whether we’ll actually do it remains to be seen. If we do, and it’s a good
possibility, I intend to go back to my first and only Warhammer Fantasy army:
the Skaven. I absolutely love these little guys, so hopefully I’ll get the
chance to build and paint some. They will all be on lovely square bases as
we’ll be playing 9th Age.
So, all in all, not very much to do at all! I’d better get
started… until next time!
